What is File Transfer?

File transfer is typically regulated by a communications protocol which establishes the rules for how information is sent between computers in a network. Common protocols used today include File Transfer Protocol (FTP), Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP).
History of the File Transfer
The development of file transfer began in the 1970s, with people seeking out new ways to share digital content beyond floppy disks. Usenet, an electronic bulletin board, was one of the first platforms to facilitate this; it allowed users to post news items and data files for others in their newsgroup.
In 1985, FTP (File Transfer Protocol) was introduced as a standard for transferring data between computer systems using the same syntax and rules. As the internet developed in the 1990s, it enabled global communication over a vast network of computers. America Online (AOL) offered subscription-based email services with web functions including file transfer capabilities.
Modern File Transfer
In 1999, Napster emerged as the first peer-to-peer file-sharing service, allowing users to exchange mp3 audio files with their peers. Within its first year, it had amassed a library of 4 million songs. This paved the way for other similar networks such as Gnutella and Freenet in the early 2000s.
