Music Gateway recently collaborated with StarAce on their impactful single, Mystical Cat. In this case study, we will explore the principles behind StarAce as a collective, examine the factors contributing to their recent release’s success, and discuss the group’s endeavors.
StarAce – The Band
The StarAce siblings began creating music in their childhood home’s living room. Raised under the same roof by the same parents, Julio, Luiz, and Thomaz StarAce developed their musical talents together.
In their home, they enjoyed a diverse range of music, spanning from The Carpenters to Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young; as well as from Charlie Daniels Band to Genesis and The Police. When the brothers were aged 3 to 9, they began learning instruments. Julio picked up guitar, Luiz chose bass guitar, and Thomaz took on drums. The band originated in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where they remain based today.
The band drew primary inspiration from Kiss, Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Brazilian popular music. However, exposure to The Beatles led them to explore other artists such as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Cat Stevens, Dire Straits, Eric Clapton, and various early rock and roll, blues, American country, and folk genres. This significantly impacted their songwriting approach.
Currently, StarAce Bros. identifies as a Fluid Rock and Roll group. Previously known as “Ted Marengos,” their singles were featured on major Brazilian radio and TV stations. In 2015, they promoted their debut and sophomore albums, First Prints and Lifts, with a tour that included stops in London, New York, Nashville, and Los Angeles.
Subsequently, Rolling Stone Magazine hailed Lifts as the top intriguing “retro” album of 2017. Following the launch of their third album, Timeless Beat, in 2019, the band embarked on a tour and delivered 45 live performances in just 50 days, spanning all regions of America from east to west and north to south.
Mystical Cat
For the first time, the band collaborated with international producer David Kershenbaum, whose extensive experience in the studio and with artists like Tracy Chapman, Peter Frampton, Joan Baez, and Yusuf/Cat Stevens pushed the band to work hard and explore new techniques.
Mystical Cat was produced in a high-quality home studio in Sao Paulo, Brazil, managed by Recording/Mastering Engineer and Co-producer Rodrigo Basso. Primarily featuring authentic guitars, bass, and drums connected to vintage amplifiers and recorded using real microphones into Pro-Tools. The song combines a retro feel with cutting-edge technology like Access Analog plugins.
Composed by Julio StarAce with lyrics co-written by Gary OC, the song draws inspiration from mystical themes and cats. The song explores attraction and misunderstanding towards someone manipulating your feelings and expectations. It narrates the tale of an individual attempting to chase an enigmatic and captivating person who constantly teases but remains elusive, much like a cat’s behavior.
